Hi Frederik and Tim!

I am writing to you because music means a lot to me and I think your topic is very interesting.

I prefer listening to J(apanese)Rock, a music genre you most likely don’t know ;).

It’s kind of like “normal” Rock although there is a difference, but honestly, I don’t know how to describe it.

JRock isn’t only “rock” it can also be “metal” or “punk rock” that depends on the band. You can’t easily put most of the bands into one category, though.

But one big difference would be the outward appearance of JRock-bands. They just simply don’t look like what you’d expect a rock-band to look like.

You could say their style is more “feminine”, but please, don’t imagine them being transvestites or something like that!

Well, as I said before it’s difficult to explain for me.

My reason for listening to rock is that rock music has got a message.

I hate listening to happy-go-lucky music (e.g. Pop music) because that’s just not what life is like in my opinion.

The lyrics are very important to me and they have to be something I can identify myself with or which I can understand.

Furthermore, it’s important for me that the bands/artists write their music and lyrics by themselves because “making music” contains that and letting someone else do all the work is no achievement and makes the whole song kind of… fake I think.

I do play some music instruments. I played the keyboard and the transverse flute some time ago and now I’m learning how to play the bass-guitar.

Music is very important in my everyday life because I always listen to music. It’s the first thing I hear in the morning and the last thing I hear in the evening.

When I come home from school the first thing I do is turning my music on. I just can’t stand being in a room without music (except when I’m in school) it makes me feel kind of uncomfortable.

I rarely let anybody influence me in general, but especially not when it comes to music.

Everybody can listen to their own kind of music and I see no point in telling somebody what music he should listen to or even disliking someone because of the kind of music he listens to.

So, what about you?

Well, I think I’ve bored you enough ;) Bye, Kyra, 11b, Jever

Hello Frederik and Tim,

We like techno music because it’s the only kind of music which does really state something. Just really cool people listen to this music. Hehe little joke, we’re listening to hiphopmusic and oldies. When you’ve drunk something oldies can start a big party and it’s really funny to dance to these kinds of music. Nobody does influence our opinion because we think everyone has his own taste in music. We like oldies because most of the time you are in a good mood when you listen to it. We think it’s important that the music does stand for something, when it’s not it’s very stupid and boring, Some people listen to music because this music is in the charts but often these persons are hanger-ons....
Music is very important for us because without music the day is very boring, When you’re at a party and there’s no music you will go after 5 minutes...And think about a disco. What’s a disco without music? When you drive a car and you’ve got no radio what would you do? Right, you would drive into the next tree because life without music is too boring. What do you think about music?
Is it important to listen to music? Do you prefer German or English lyrics? What’s important for a good song? We would be happy if you wrote back
With greetings Verena and Ina

Hello Verena and Ina,

First we would like to say that the music we prefer is hip hop and rap. In that genre the beat is really important for a good sound and the right mood of the song. But a good instrumental is nothing without good lyrics. Tim doesn’t differentiate between German or American rap music. Frederik started listening predominantly to German music and now he is listening more to international rap. So you see music is very important for us. We agree with you that oldies are very good for party. But  there are two different kinds of oldies. There are the party oldies and the social-critical oldies like the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and many more. Tim prefers the party oldies. Frederik prefers the social-critical songs but also likes the party oldies. Perhaps you can tell us how you get your music. Do you buy your music or do you download it legally or illegally. Which medium do you use ( cd, tape, mp3, Vinyl…).

Hope you write back Tim and Frederik, Jever, 11b

Hi Freddy and Tim again ,

What's up? You asked if I buy my music or if I download it legally or illegally. I have to say that I downloaded it (legally ;))  a year or more but now I buy my music or I rent it from my friends. Sometimes I find a song very good and when I've heard it every day it's very terrible. So I think it's nicer to listen to some songs at special moments as when I can hear the song every day and every moment. Do you buy your music? Do you think it's nice to hear a song the whole day long? That could be very boring I think.

I like party oldies AND social-critical oldies because they rock the party. Tracy Chapman is a very good singer, do you know her? "Fast car" is one of my favourite track - Talking about revolution is very good too.

Okay have a good second English-lesson;)

Nice greetings from Verena, 11b, Jever

Hi Vrena ,

Frederik: I predominantly buy my music as vinyl records. Because of that I have a small vinyl collection which consists of about 100 records. But I hope it will get more. In my opinion it’s very sad that vinyl records aren’t produced in many music styles. But fortunately rap keeps them alive. So I wish you nice holidays and a lot of fun. Ps: Thank you for your answer!

Tim: My music collection consists of about fifty Cds. Most of them are normal audio cds.

Ten of them are mp3 cds. I like that type of cd  because you have many different pieces of music on one cd. You put the cd in and you can listen to music a long time period. How many cds do you have?

If you want to talk more with us then write back! Ps: Thanks a lo t for your answer and enjoy your holidays.

Together: Thanks a lot for your mail!

Hey you two!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you see I’ve chosen your topic, although I think it’s quite difficult to talk about music. In some way I could describe myself as almost universal, but actually I just choose styles and songs in addition to my mood. But don’t worry, it isn’t that bad as it might look like to you. I can’t listen to everything, but I’m always looking for something new that excites me. At the moment I’m in a kind of hip hop/ reggae phase and it is important to me to have fun with it.

I’ve played the piano for 7 years in a music school and I even successfully passed an exam in music theory and in the history of music. About two years ago I also tried to play the guitar, but unfortunately it just wasn’t for me. After all this time I have understood that playing an instrument will never be my hobby, although I enjoy listening to the instrumental music.

I could say, that my friends can easily influence my taste in music, if they have listened to something that I might like too I’m always open for new songs, styles, concerts, videos and so on. At the same time I can’t bear everything, there are a lot of exceptions that just make me sick, although I would never judge people who like it. I’m strongly convicted that music is a very personal thing.

Of course my everyday life depends on music too ( now it’s the reason why am I able to write you an e-mail at 23.00 o’clock in the eveningJ ) – it keeps me fit and music is definitely the best way how to calm down or how to relax and I can’t imagine any kind of party without music.

See you!!!!!!! Evija, 11b, Jever

Hi Evija,

First of all we have to say thank you for your email. Thank you! Secondly we agree with you with the fact that there couldn't be a party without music. Even a memorial service needs music. Also we agree wit you that hip hop and reggae are a very good combination of music styles. What are your favourite artists and does Latvia have famous musicians? Or does your country have musicians? What kind of hip hop do you listen to – to German or to American and does Latvia have rappers? At the end we want to thank you again for your answer! Ps: Hope you write back and thanks a lot for your next answer. All in all Thank you.

What kind of music do you prefer?
I like pop music but I hate classic music. I think it's intolerable.
Are there reasons for listening to a special kind of music ?
Pop music is more rhythmical in my mind .I feel calm and relaxa when I listen to pop music .
Do you play a music instrument?
I'm learning to play guitar. I think guitar is the most perfect instrument. Guitar is the only instrument by which we can make a song.
How important is music in your everyday life ?
When I'm sad or tired music gives me relaxation and calmness. When I study hard it causes my mind to be relaxed .So music is very important in my life.
Does anyone influence you in your opinion about music?
Yes my friends, family influence me in my opinion about music. Famous musicians and their masterpieces influence me.
Maryam Mohammady From Iran

Hi Maryam,

First of all I’d like to thank you for your answer. I like the way you answer our questions. It’s clear.

I don’t like pop music so much, because I think it gets repeated all the time. The beats and lyrics are always the same. They always talk about their boyfriends or girlfriends and how much they love them. After a while it gets boring. In this business it’s all about money and publicity. The pop stars do any kind of rubbish to get publicity, because even bad publicity is also publicity. But I don’t want to criticize you. This is my opinion and everybody has a different one. Who are your favourite pop stars? Britney Spears? Or Justin Timberlake? They are always in the news. I have enough of them.

I agree with you in the point that the environment influences you in your opinion about good music, but this only happens in your childhood. When you grow up nobody should influence you. You have to know what you like or do not like. You have to find your own way in relation to your music style or other decisions like what you want to do after school or where you want to live.

If you want write back.

Tim Sandkuhl, tsfs-g, 11b, Jever

Hi Tim and Frederik!

I want to tell your something about my opinion to music.
I prefer to listen to Hip Hop music. There are many reasons for my choice. I think most of the Hip Hop artists think a lot about what they want to tell you. In most of the texts, there are a lot of statements to social - or political problems. I'm not one of the people, who listen to one kind of music and hate the others. Most of my friends listen to Rock or something like that. I don't like when I am on a party that the whole time Rock-music is played. It's always one noise and you can't listen to the friend, you are talking to. Hip Hop is different, there is a smooth beat, which doesn't drown out the other voices. You can also dance better to Hip Hop when you compare Hip Hop and Rock. "Dancing" to Rock (Pogen) is like a street-fight, I think.
Music is very important in my daily life. I always listen to music but I'm not "addicted" to the sounds. I won't die, if I don't listen to music for a few days. ;)
I only listen to music, but I don't play an instrument like a guitar or something else. Now, it's too late to start learning, when I want to be very good. But I'm not sad about it.

Hi Olläff,

What’s up? First of all I want to thank you for your mail! I have to say that I agree with you that it’s a little bit boring when you are on a party where you only listen to rock. But it’s also boring when  you only hear hip hop. You said something about dancing to hip hop. My opinion of people who dance to hip hop is a little bit different. There are the normal people who “only” dance to it. That’s ok. But then there are the people who think that they are so cool and so special and they touch all over their body and so on. For me such people and especially the girls seem like sluts. But nevertheless Hip hop is a great music with a lot of potential because it consists of great beats and deep lyrics. So if you want to talk again e.g. about music or something like that then write back!

Hi dear friends,

I prefer Iranian traditional music because it is the most beautiful kind of music. One of my friends plays music and I usually go to her concerts. My favorite group is Arian. They play very beautifully and listening to them I feel happy. We have a lot of good musicians that play traditional music. For example Shjarian, Banan, Seraj and Nazery.
Bye! Bye! Zeynab Sadat Miraghaee, Tehran

Hi Zeynab Sadat Miraghaee,

I don´t know any kind of Iraqi music. But I’m interested in listening to that kind of music.

Have you ever listened to the modern music styles like hip hop or punk rock? Is it an exception that you listen to that kind of music or do most of the people of your generation listen to that kind of music? What kind of music do you listen to when you go out for party? I don’t think that you make party with traditional music. Is modern music popular in your country? Do you know popular international artists? Many questions, you know. But if you are interested in discussing with us, write back. Thanks for your statement to our topic.

Tim and Frederik, 11b, Jever

Hi Frederik,

Nice to hear that you are interested in music, as much as I am!!
So I am sorry that I have to tell you, that you had a little reading-mistake. Actually I play a "Gaita", which is a medieval bagpipe from Spain.
The guitars I play are a western-guitar from Kirkland an electric strat. from squire and a seven-string e-guitar from Career. And I play about four and a half years.
I think that music is more or less the most important  thing in my life, and I couldn't imagine a life without. Even school or things like that are not as important as good music for me, and I think you exactly know what I mean, don't you?
So, when you consider the point that I nearly like every kind of music, rap music belongs to that. I would be very interested in the things you do when you invest time in producing this kind of music, so write something! I would be very interested. (And don't let you irritate from the fact we could do this in the next break tomorrow)
Jonathan (member d_r_s), 11e, Jever

Hi to dark roses society!

You said you play a guitar from Spain, what brand is it? And how long have you played the guitar? I have been playing now for two years. But that isn't the main music direction I am doing. Primarily I enjoy doing rap music. That is making beats, writing rhymes or in general writing lyrics. Because of that I like to read “normal” poetry and I want to reach that level in a modern way. In my opinion music is very important in the daily life. Music isn’t only listening to music it is kind of life attitude. So if you interested in talking with me about music write back !

Hi Bahtiyor,

thank you for your mail. What kind of music do you listen to? Do you also listen to hard rock? Or do you prefer other music styles? We like hip hop and oldies. Do you know American oldies and how much time do you spend listening to music? You said something about Rammstein in your mail. Do you know other German acts? If you interested in talking about music in connection of social aspects then please write back.
