Destiny

Hello Silke, Caro and Kyra!
This is my opinion about destiny and coincidence.

I think it’s very difficult to make differences between these two words because their meanings are mostly the same. The only difference I make is in which way these events change or influence your life. So I would say that coincidence is a little thing that happens in your life. For example: A traffic light was red just when I had the test for my driving license. The coincidence is that I passed that traffic light 50 times and I never saw it red. But just in the test it was red and I passed without braking…. damn!

Destiny is something that takes effect for  a very long time which changes your life very much. It’s a point in your life that you’ll never forget. For example: If Henrik hadn’t moved from Wuppertal to Hooksiel I wouldn’t have gone to Mariengymnasium after the sixth grade and so I would never have got to know all my friends today. I’m not sure if this all happened by the influence of Henrik but I think he played an important role at that time because first I thought about going to a technical high-school.

Yes I believe in destiny and coincidence because these two stories are the proof that these things exist in my mind. But I think you realize a destiny a long time after it really happened. It was the same when I thought about your topic. First I tried to define these two words in my own opinion and then I looked with these definitions in my mind for those moments. So I realized the destiny with Henrik which is more than 4 and a half years ago. A coincidence just happens and at the same moment you think or say: “Mmh, that was coincidence”.

Hello Elmar!
Thank you very much for your long and informative response. It was really interesting to read your opinion above all because you have experienced coincidence as well as destiny.
Besides, we agree with you in most of the points which youve mentioned. In our opinion, you could define destiny as some kind of supernatural force or power that is responsible for everything that will happen in your life, and therefore you could say it is somehow pre-determined. As you have said before, destiny is an incident which could influence your whole life.
Honestly, we (Caro and Silke) have to say that we absolutely dont believe in destiny because, as Kyra prefers to say, we are too rational to believe in supernatural forces. We just dont believe that there is something that predestines our whole life. Moreover, we are definitely too emancipated to be subjected by a supernatural power which commands everything in our life.
Nevertheless, we do at least believe a little bit in coincidence. Coincidence is, in our opinion, something in your life which happens at a very surprising moment which you dont expect to happen.
Mostly, when you say "destiny" nearly everyone would say: "Destiny means that your whole life is  predestined".
I (Kyra) dont think so. I believe in destiny, though, but Id define it as a moment which you cannot influence by yourself and which will have an effect on at least part of your remaining life. For instance, the example our group mentioned in our intro: You meet a friend again who you havent seen for ages.
Coincidence on the other hand, Id define as some random incident which may be surprising at that moment, but which isnt very important for the rest of your life. It happens and that was it.
Well, we hope you are not bored by reading our opinion! So, we will be glad if you write back!

Hello Caro, Kyra and Silke

At first I have to say that I don’t really believe in destiny. How can you notice that it’s destiny to meet your friend on a street if you haven’t seen him for a long time? It sounds maybe a little idiotic, but I think that the whole life is predetermined, you don’t know it, but you live it little by little. It sounds a little bit strange. But I can’t explain it in a different way, but maybe you could. What about you? Do you really believe in destiny? And why do you believe in it? Did something happen why you believe in it? Tell me more about your own opinion, because I would like to know why some people believe in destiny.

Ciao.  Ina, 11b, Jever

Hey Ina!

Caro and I (Silke) dont believe in destiny either. But we are interested in people and their opinions who believe in it. I dont believe in any sort of God or superhuman power. Thats because I couldnt imagine that something like destiny is real. What do you mean, when you say that you think that your life is predetermined? Is predetermined where you will live in the future or are there more important things like your character for example predetermined? Caro and I, we couldnt imagine something like that, because you have the chance to make your own decisions and to change your life as you want to. How it is possible that there is something like destiny? Kyra holds a different opinion. She believes in some sort of destiny. Its very difficult to explain it. She doesnt think that the whole life is predetermined. She believes that some situations are predetermined by destiny. If she met an old friend somewhere in the streets she would believe that it was something like destiny. For me its a little bit strange because I think that it was coincidence. We got a few other mails, but I think only one person believes in destiny... I think most people think to realistically to believe in something like that. What do you think?

Nice greetings from kyra, caro and silke! 11b, Jever

Hello!

Now I want to tell you something to your topic “destiny”. I have different opinions to your question: What is destiny?

I think when my best friend disappears out of my life and I meet her after 5 years in street it isn`t destiny! And because of this she wouldn’t be my best friend when she suddenly goes away!! In my opinion I would meet her accidentally. Everybody says “friends are forever”, but I made different experiences. I think destiny could influence your whole life!!!!! It could be a nice experience, for example you win a lot of money and your life will be completely changed - suddenly you are rich. But on the other hand it could be a bad experience, for example your parents die at a car accident. It would happen just once in a lifetime and it would change your life forever. Because of this you can get a lot of problems with your own life. In my opinion destiny is a kind of conduct, that expects that you accept your experience of life. (For example: Don’t cry your whole life long but also live your life!). I made my own experiences. Five years ago I lost my father of brain cancer and one year later my mother told me that I have a different father than my sisters! It was very hard to accept it , but now it isn’t a problem for me to see how life can go on!

Hey Aileen!

thank you for your mail! We dont really believe in destiny either! We picked this topic because we would like to know, if somebody believes in some kind of destiny! What do you mean when you say that destiny could influence your whole life? Is it destiny when you win a lot of money or is it coincidence?! In our opinion this is a very difficult question and we think that the opinions differ from person to person. I (Silke) for example think that nearly everything which happens is coincidence.

We are very sorry for what had happened to you and your family. Nevertheless you are able to manage your life successfully. Thats great and in my opinion that shows that you are a really strong person.

We would be glad if you answered!

Hello Caro, Silke and Kyra
Thank you for writing to me!
In my opinion you are right, it´ s very difficult to talk about the difference between “destiny” and “coincidence”. I think, I have  a different opinion than other people, because I have made my own experiences. Because of this it’s difficult to understand me!? You are also right when you say that isn’t destiny, it´ s coincidence, for example when you win a lot of money. For me it’s different, because it would influence your whole life, you would be “happy forever” (it’s relative)! In my opinion it’s destiny. I know I told you now my opinion again, but it’s very difficult for me to explain to you what I mean. I think we could discuss this topic for a long time, because your arguments are also right. Everybody has his own truth and experience of life.
Thank you for the compliment, but I think I’m not a strong person, because I have a lot of problems  with my past and so the appearances are deceptive.

Hi Silke, Caro and Kyra!

Hmm, I’m sure I’ve seen this question before, it sounds familiar… I answered a question like that, when I worked on my reading-log for “Holes”… Now, I’ll write to you, what I think about destiny.

I think, there is a difference between coincidence and destiny.

Coincidence is a kind of luck or bad luck. It happens every day. But destiny is a very special thing. It doesn’t happen very often and it takes a lot of time to be realized.

When you drop a cup on the floor and it doesn’t break, it’s coincidence.

But when you meet a special person only because something strange happened, it’s destiny.

I believe in destiny because nothing is impossible. Everyone gained experience with destiny – perhaps, he doesn’t know…

Your example, “One of your best friends suddenly disappears out of your life. 5 years later you meet him again in the street.”

I think this situation is coincidence. It’s just luck that you meet him again.

At this moment, I don’t remember any situations where I got experience with destiny.

Bye Olaf 11b, Jever

Hey Olaf!

Youre one of the few who answered our questions about destiny! Somehow I can understand it, because we all had to answer this question in our reading log. But we think thats good, because everybody only needs to write his text from the reading-log again... Well, however! We three have nearly the same opinion about destiny. We dont believe in it. We dont know why not, but somehow we think its an invention of mankind. Where is the difference between destiny and coincidence? We think everything that happens is coincidence. Perhaps we will come in a situation after which we will say that it was destiny. But something like that hasnt happened to us yet. Perhaps you are right and we only dont know that something like destiny happened to us. Were not really sure if we believe in destiny or not, because some people are sure that destiny has changed their life. We think some things in the world cannot be explained and even destiny exists. We will see.....

Nice greetings!
